Smoky quartz is a transparent gemstone that comes in a variety of different shades of brown, from a light tan to nearly black (referred to as morion).
Those that have a deep brown color tend to be the most valuable type of smoky quartz.
The brown color comes from natural radiation interacting with aluminum traces in the crystal.
This process occurs over a period of several million years, with longer periods creating darker shades.
