What is prehnite?
Prehnite is a mineral from the phyllosilicate group, with the formula Ca₂Al(AlSi₃O₁₀)(OH)₂. It was the first mineral described and named in honor of a European: Dutch colonel Hendrik von Prehn, who brought the first specimens from the Cape of Good Hope (South Africa) to Europe in the second half of the 18th century. It was formally described by geologist Abraham Werner in 1788.
It crystallizes in the orthorhombic system, although it is better known in its massive habits: globular, botryoidal (grape-like), tabular, or fibrous aggregates. Well-formed individual crystals are rare. Its pale green to apple green color is due to traces of iron and, to a lesser extent, manganese in the structure.
Mineralogically close to epidote and zoisite, prehnite is part of low-grade metamorphism mineral associations and cavity fillings in basic rocks (basalts, diabases).

Composition and crystal structure
Prehnite's structure combines layers of Si and Al tetrahedra alternating with Al octahedra and Ca polyhedra. The hydroxyl (OH) group in the formula is structural and explains its relative instability at high temperatures. Partial substitution of Al by Fe³⁺ is responsible for the green color: higher iron content results in darker and more yellowish tones.
Prehnite does not exhibit appreciable UV fluorescence in most specimens, although some pieces from specific localities show weak longwave UV fluorescence.
Hardness, toughness, and durability
With a Mohs hardness of 6–6.5, prehnite offers sufficient durability for pendants, earrings, and bracelets. Its cleavage is imperfect (not as pronounced as in rhodonite), which gives it greater impact toughness. For daily wear rings, surface wear may appear over time if it rubs against harder surfaces such as quartz (7 Mohs). A bezel setting prolongs the life of the piece.
Optical properties
The vitreous to waxy luster is one of prehnite's most appreciated features: the polished surface presents a soft luminosity, without the intense sparkle of quartz or spinel. Some transparent gem-quality specimens are faceted, with a refractive index of 1.611–1.665 and birefringence of 0.020–0.035. Transparency varies from almost completely transparent (rare) to opaque (in compact masses with inclusions).
Prehnite varieties
Prehnite does not have well-established named varieties in mineralogy, but in the lapidary market, the following are distinguished:
- Prehnite with epidote: the most popular variety, where black or dark green needles or nodules of epidote are included in the pale prehnite mass, creating a very decorative contrast. It mainly comes from Mali and South Africa.
- Transparent prehnite: high-quality faceted gems, scarce in the market, from Scotland and some localities in Namibia.
- Botryoidal prehnite: complete globular aggregates on a basalt matrix, used as collector's pieces.
Prehnite with epidote is easily distinguished from jade by its greater translucency and dark inclusions.
Where is prehnite found?
The main commercial sources are Australia (Kalgoorlie, Western Australia), where excellent quality material in apple-green tones is extracted, and South Africa (Cradock, Eastern Cape), a classic deposit that gave the mineral its name. China produces large volumes of prehnite with epidote, highly valued in jewelry. Mali is a source of material with black epidote inclusions, highly sought after by collectors.
Pakistan (Khyber Pakhtunkhwa District) produces transparent facet-grade gems. In the United States, deposits in New Jersey and Virginia have produced material of mineralogical interest. In Europe, Scottish localities (Kilpatrick Hills, Scotland) are historically important but have minimal current production.
There are no known deposits of lapidary quality prehnite in Spain.

How to identify authentic prehnite
Basic tests
Genuine prehnite has a characteristic translucency that dyed plastic and glass do not faithfully reproduce: light passes through it slightly irregularly, with internal variations visible when held against a light source. The polished surface is cool to the touch. Its density (2.8–3.0 g/cm³) makes it heavier than plastic but lighter than most dark silicates.
Common confusions and differences with imitations
- Pale green nephrite jade: denser (2.9–3.1 g/cm³), with characteristic fibrous texture when cut and without the waxy translucency of prehnite. Jade does not show epidote inclusions.
- Chrysoprase: more intense and uniform green, without inclusions, more translucent. It is a variety of chalcedony (microcrystalline quartz), harder (6.5–7 Mohs).
- Pale green glass: visible bubbles with a magnifying glass, lighter weight, lacks the internal texture of prehnite.
- Green quartz (prase): harder (7 Mohs), without the waxy translucency, with fibrous actinolite inclusions instead of epidote.
Care and maintenance
Cleaning
Clean with lukewarm water, neutral soap, and a soft cloth or fine-bristled brush. Prehnite tolerates occasional moisture well but should not be submerged for prolonged periods because the presence of the OH group in the structure can be affected by very acidic or very alkaline media. Avoid ultrasonics on pieces with epidote inclusions, as the difference in thermal expansion between the two minerals can generate micro-stresses.
Storage and precautions
Store separately from quartz, spinel, and other harder minerals to avoid scratches. Prehnite can scratch glass and feldspar, so it should also not be stored with stilbite or calcite without protection. The green color is stable and does not fade with ordinary light. Avoid abrupt temperature changes.
