Tanzanite is a variety of zoisite with an intense blue-violet color produced by traces of vanadium. It is exclusively mined in a 7 km² strip at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, in Tanzania. Its strong trichromatic pleochroism—blue, violet, and burgundy depending on the viewing angle—has made it one of the most in-demand gems on the market since its discovery in 1967.
