This specific piece
Larimar comes exclusively from a single deposit in the world: the Sierra de Bahoruco, in the Dominican Republic. The blue color is produced by the substitution of calcium by copper in the pectolite structure — a process that turns a relatively common mineral species into a variety with extremely limited distribution.
The fibrous texture of larimar is visible to the naked eye: white and blue lines intertwine, forming unique patterns in each fragment. The copper of the band complements the blue tone of the stone with its metallic warmth.
Larimar in lapidary tradition
Larimar was mineralogically identified in 1974 by geologist Miguel Méndez and artist Lorraine Guédez, who named it by combining the name of Méndez's daughter, Larissa, with mar (sea). In the Dominican Republic, it quickly became an identifying stone and a symbol of local craftsmanship.
Crystal tradition associates it with tranquility and connection to the ocean.
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.
Frequently asked questions
Is it genuine larimar or imitation?
Genuine larimar has a visible fibrous texture, blue color with interwoven white lines, and characteristic tactile density. The most common imitations are blue pectolite from other origins or dyed turquoise. No detectable treatment in this piece.
What circumference does size 13 ES correspond to?
Size 13 ES corresponds to an inner circumference of ~53 mm (diameter ~17 mm). Consult our size chart.
Is larimar durable enough for use as a ring?
With 4.5–5 Mohs, larimar is moderately soft. We recommend not hitting it against hard surfaces and removing it when washing hands or playing sports to prolong its lifespan.
Is it a unique piece?
Yes. Each larimar fragment has a different pattern. The image shows the exact piece you will receive.
How should it be cared for?
Larimar can discolor with prolonged direct sunlight exposure and contact with chemicals. See care guide.
