This particular piece

The chrysoprase in this piece has a bluer green than clean varieties, with dark veins — manganese oxides or inclusions of the serpentinite host rock — that create a unique organic pattern. With a 5 mm profile, it has enough depth for medium-height bezel settings without weight being an issue.

The lapidary chose to respect the natural shape of the fragment, resulting in an elongated freeform outline. There is no standard calibration: the silhouette was determined by the stone itself.

How chrysoprase with matrix veins forms

Chrysoprase is a chalcedony (microcrystalline SiO₂) whose green color comes from nickel silicates — willemseite and pimelite — distributed throughout the mass. In "with matrix" varieties, part of the serpentinite host rock or manganese oxide inclusions remain integrated, forming dark veins. These varieties are less common than clean ones and their pattern makes them more visually complex.

For what setting it works

  • Bezel setting (925 silver or other precious metals) — the flat back and 5 mm profile allow for a standard height bezel; the contrast between the green and silver enhances the natural veins
  • Statement rings / Asymmetrical pendants — the elongated freeform fits into organic designs where the irregularity of the silhouette is part of the concept
  • Wire wrap — the flat surface facilitates wire grip; the veins add visual interest to the finished piece

Chrysoprase in history

Chrysoprase was prized in Greco-Roman antiquity. Pliny the Elder mentions it in Naturalis Historia as a prase of remarkable color. For centuries it was confused with emerald; Agricola began to distinguish them in the 16th century. In the 18th century, Frederick the Great of Prussia decorated Sanssouci with Silesian chrysoprase, elevating it to a luxury stone in the European court.

In crystal tradition, chrysoprase is associated with renewal and conscious joy. The veined variety is interpreted as a symbol of the path that integrates imperfections: the line that crosses the stone as part of the design, not as a defect.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to recognize genuine chrysoprase

Veined chrysoprase can be confused with chrysocolla or variscite. Chrysoprase has a hardness greater than 6.5 and does not scratch with a steel coin; chrysocolla is much softer (2.5–3.5 Mohs). Manganese oxide veins are black or brown; turquoise inclusions are usually bluish-gray. Under magnification, chrysoprase shows a uniform and very fine texture, characteristic of chalcedony.

Frequently asked questions

Are the veins a defect?

No. They are natural inclusions of the host rock that were integrated during the mineral's formation. They are part of the piece's unique character and do not affect the structural integrity of the cabochon for jewelry.

Is the color treated?

No. The green comes from nickel silicates native to the mineral. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification.

How do I care for chrysoprase?

Clean with a soft damp cloth. Avoid prolonged exposure to intense sunlight (can lighten the color), alkalis, and ultrasonics. More information in your jewelry care guide.

Are the dimensions exact?

The measurements (13 × 10 × 5 mm) are for reference. Tolerance ±0.5 mm due to being hand-carved.
