The scaly structure gives the polished surface multiple small flashes under direct light — a diffuse luster that changes with the angle. Freeform retains more material and is usually larger; rectangular allows for uniform series or aligned sets.
How lepidolite is formed
Lepidolite is a lithian mica formed in granitic pegmatites, where lithium and fluorine concentrate in the last fractions of the magmatic fluid. The lilac-violet color is attributed to traces of manganese in octahedral positions. The laminar structure produces the perfect cleavage and characteristic scaly appearance.
What settings it works for
-
Bezel in 925 silver — with 2.5-3 Mohs, a closed bezel is essential; minimum 1.5-2 mm above the stone's face.
-
Pendants and earrings — jewelry without direct impact; lilac contrasts with oxidized silver (more dramatic) or polished silver (more delicate).
-
Wire wrap — soft 22-24 gauge wire and open wrapping; freeform is safer than rectangular for this setting.
Lepidolite in tradition
Identified as an independent mineral in the late 18th century, its name derives from the Greek lepis ("scale"). In crystal tradition, it is associated with mental calm and smooth life transitions (serenity and balance).
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.
Frequently asked questions
Is it treated?
Untreated. The lilac color is natural, produced by traces of manganese in the mica structure.
Is it safe for an everyday pendant?
In a pendant with a closed bezel that protects all edges, yes; we recommend removing the jewelry before intense physical activities.
What is the difference between freeform and rectangular?
Freeform has an organic silhouette and a larger average size; rectangular fits geometric settings. Both have the same finish and lapidary quality.
How to care for it?
Avoid water, ultrasonic cleaners, and mechanical pressure. Clean with a soft, dry cloth. More at jewelry care.
