This specific piece
Working with cabochon pairs requires more careful selection than for individual pieces: you need to find two fragments from the same jasper block with the same vein density, the same background tone, and the same dark brown saturation so that the resulting earrings look like siblings rather than distant cousins.
Coco jasper is a relatively compact material without open inclusions, which makes it comfortable to carve into freeforms without risk of fractures during the process.
How coco jasper pattern forms
Jasper is an opaque microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂) variety, primarily formed by silica precipitation in cavities of sedimentary or volcanic rock.
What settings it works for
-
Matching earrings (pairs) in 925 silver bezel — the primary use for this format. An oval or freeform bezel in oxidized silver or bright silver produces an organic, earthy-looking earring that contrasts well with the beige-brown color of coco jasper. Sold as a pair specifically for this use.
-
Double pendant or matching pendant + ring — goldsmiths working on coordinated collections use the pair to create a large pendant and a smaller ring from the same mineral, ensuring visual consistency between different pieces.
-
Wire wrap in pairs for earrings — jasper with 6.5-7 Mohs holds up well to wire wrap. The veined texture makes even a simple wrap visually rich.
Jasper in lapidary tradition
Jasper is one of the oldest lapidary materials in human history: there are carved jasper pieces over 35,000 years old found in European Upper Paleolithic sites.
In crystal tradition, jasper in general is associated with stability, grounding, and protection. Warm-toned jaspers like coco are linked to earth connection and emotional balance. The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.
How to recognize genuine jasper
Authentic jasper is opaque: it does not let light pass through even at very thin edges.
Frequently asked questions
Are the two pieces in the pair exactly identical?
They are consistent in color and overall pattern, but not identical: jasper is a natural mineral with inherent variations even within the same block.
Can I order two pairs or specific combinations?
Pairs are pre-selected in the workshop. For specific size, shape, or pattern needs, please write to us before ordering and we will see what is currently available.
Is it treated?
No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification.
What shapes are available?
Oval, fan, and freeform. Availability of each shape varies by batch. The dimensions of the pieces in each pair are matching with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm.
Is it suitable for daily wear earrings?
Yes. With 6.5-7 Mohs, jasper is hard enough for daily wear in earrings. We recommend a closed bezel or setting with side protection for greater care of the material.
How to care for them?
Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Jasper is stable to most common chemical agents but avoid prolonged contact with acids (lemons, vinegar) during intensive use. More tips on jewelry care.
