This particular piece

The rose cut is a technique historically predating the modern brilliant cut: a dome of triangular facets on a flat base, which diffuses light more softly and diffusely than the brilliant cut. In clear quartz, the rose cut has an antique jewel effect – the sparkle is more intimate, less "diamond-like" and more mineral.

Each piece has a different distribution of needles: some are highly concentrated in one area, others have needles evenly distributed, some have one or two prominent needles and a clean field. The lapidary chose black needles (not the more common gold ones) because the contrast with the clear quartz creates a more graphic and contemporary effect.

What are rutile needles?

Rutile is titanium dioxide (TiO₂) that crystallizes into very elongated needles within quartz as it forms. Golden rutile needles are the best known; black ones are less frequent and can be rutile with high iron content, black tourmaline (schorl), or ilmenite, depending on the deposit. All varieties of needles in quartz are commercially called "rutilated quartz" even if the exact composition varies.

What mounting works for this

  • Minimalist ring (925 silver) – the 6 mm diameter is ideal for a stackable ring, knuckle ring, or delicate solitaire ring.
  • Delicate earrings and pendant – the small size works very well for stud earrings or a pendant with a thin chain.
  • Fine wire wrap – the 6 mm diameter requires fine wire (0.4-0.5 mm) for proportionate wrapping; the flat base of the rose cut makes seating easier.

Rutilated quartz in lapidary tradition

Quartz with needle inclusions has historical commercial names: "Venus hair" (for golden needles), "love arrows," and "goddess hair" in different cultures.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.

How to recognize genuine black rutilated quartz

Genuine needles are three-dimensional – they can be seen in depth under magnification and are not surface stains. The base quartz is clear or transparent, not artificially colored. The most common imitations are resin with printed needles (the needles are perfectly flat and uniform) or quartz with ink in fractures (the "needles" follow the crystal's fracture planes, they are not linear inside).

Frequently asked questions

Why are the needles black instead of golden?

Golden needles are pure rutile (TiO₂); black ones have a higher iron content (ilmenite, a variety of rutile) or are black tourmaline (schorl). Both are natural inclusions; the black color gives the quartz a more graphic and contemporary look than classic gold.

Are they treated?

Untreated. The needles are natural solid inclusions completely trapped within the quartz. The base quartz shows no indicators of treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; no formal gemological certification.
