This specific piece

Siberian chromium diopside is one of the few intense green gems available that do not require treatment to achieve their saturation: the color comes entirely from the chromium present in the crystal lattice, the same element that colors emerald and tsavorite garnet. In a 10 mm round format, the faceted cut multiplies the light reflection points on the convex surface, creating a depth effect that surpasses that of a smooth cabochon of the same size.

Why chromium diopside is green without treatment

Chromium is one of the most powerful chromophore elements in mineralogy: even in part-per-million concentrations, it produces intense greens in gems. In diopside (calcium and magnesium pyroxene), chromium partially replaces aluminum in the crystal lattice, absorbing light in the red and blue wavelengths and transmitting green. This mechanism is identical to that of emerald, which explains the similarity in tone between both gems. Unlike dyed green quartz—which loses color over time—the green of chromium diopside is stable and inherent to the piece's mineralogy.

What settings it works for

  • Bezel-set solitaire ring (925 silver) — the 10 mm round is a statement size for a finger ring; the intense green contrasts well with silver.
  • Minimalist pendant — in a low-profile tubular bezel, the 10 mm circle creates a pendant with a moderate presence, ideal for everyday wear.
  • Wire wrap — the circular format facilitates spiral wrapping; suitable for those working with copper or silver wire.

Chromium diopside in lapidary tradition

Diopside was mineralogically identified in the 19th century, but its chromiferous variety from Siberia only entered the jewelry market in the 1970s, when the Yakutia deposits began to be commercially exploited. Before that date, intense untreated green was the exclusive territory of emerald, tsavorite, and chrome garnet.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.

How to recognize genuine chromium diopside

Intense to dark green color with no gradations towards yellow (which would indicate peridot) or blue (tsavorite). Under magnification, needle-like or oriented particle inclusions are characteristic of the monoclinic crystal system of pyroxene.

Frequently asked questions

Is it similar to emerald? How is it different?

In color, they are similar — both owe their green to chromium. The main difference is the mineral species (pyroxene vs. beryl), hardness (5.5–6.5 vs. 7.5–8 Mohs), and price. Diopside has greater susceptibility to physical impact than emerald, which is why protective settings are recommended.

Is it color treated?

Untreated. The intense green color is natural due to structural chromium, not dye or irradiation. Stable to light and moderate heat.

Is it suitable for everyday rings?

For occasional use with a closed bezel. Mohs 5.5–6.5 makes it susceptible to scratches from hard surfaces (steel, quartz, etc.) in intensive daily use. For daily use, a high bezel that protects the faceted cut is recommended.

Why do some variants show zero stock?

They are unique pieces already purchased. The available variants with active stock are those that appear selectable in the variant selector.

Are the dimensions exact?

10 mm diameter with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm as they are free-form, non-industrially calibrated pieces.
