Almandine garnet in a 5mm trillion cut. The triangle with 43 facets concentrates the deep red of almandine into a high-refraction geometry, generating intense reddish flashes visible even in low light. For setting in fine jewelry in 925 silver.

This specific gemstone

Mozambique almandine has one of the purest red saturations on the market: the iron in the silicate structure produces selective absorption that favors purplish-reds without the tendency to black of darker almandines. In a 5mm trillion, the depth of color creates a striking contrast with the white of silver without the gem appearing too small to the eye.

The standard 5mm calibration allows direct mounting in 5mm trillion settings in 925 silver without adjustment. The lower vertex of the trillion is the most sensitive point — we recommend settings that protect it.

What setting it works for

  • Three-prong setting (925 silver) — The garnet trillion with three prongs at the vertices is the classic combination. The red of the almandine contrasts with the white of the silver in a direct and clean way.
  • Solitaire ring or symmetrical sets — Three 5mm trillions in a stepped arrangement or a central solitaire create pieces with high visual presence.
  • Hoops and earrings — As a pair, the garnet trillion offers more geometry and visual volume than a round of the same size.

Garnet in lapidary tradition

Garnet was one of the first gemstones worked by humans: there is evidence of garnet cabochons in Egyptian goldsmithing from 3100 BC. The Middle Ages called it "carbuncle" — the gem that burned like a live ember. The Romans used it in seals and signet rings for its ease of engraving. In crystal tradition, garnet is associated with passion, vital energy, and strength.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to recognize genuine almandine garnet

Genuine almandine has a deep, slightly purplish red with no double refraction (it is isotropic). Its luster is resinous-vitreous, duller than the red of ruby. The 7.5 Mohs hardness differentiates it from Hessonite garnet (more orange, 6.5-7 Mohs) and Rhodolite (pinker).

Frequently asked questions

Is it natural garnet?

Yes — untreated almandine garnet. The red is natural; the statement is based on gemological observation, without formal certification included.

Is it calibrated for standard settings?

Yes, with a tolerance of ±0.1 mm — suitable for standard 5mm trillion settings in 925 silver without adjustment.

Do the trillion vertices need protection?

The three vertices are the most vulnerable points. We recommend settings with prongs or a bezel that covers each vertex. The triangular bezel is the most protective option.

Suitable for everyday wear?

At 7-7.5 Mohs, it is one of the most resistant gemstones for everyday jewelry. The trillion's vertices are the critical point — avoid direct lateral impacts.

How to care for it?

Warm water and neutral soap; generally safe in ultrasonic cleaners if there are no fractures. See care guide.
