| Item type |
Lot of assorted shapes; each piece has a unique banding pattern |
This particular lot
The green banding pattern ranges from light, almost lime green to dark emerald green, sometimes with black spots of psilomelane or bluish veins of azurite — different in each piece of the lot. The diversity of formats allows the goldsmith to choose the most suitable piece for each project or to create coordinated series.
How the banding pattern forms
Malachite precipitates as a secondary mineral in the oxidation zone of copper deposits. The concentric banding pattern results from rhythmic variations in the precipitation rate from Cu²⁺-rich waters: each light-dark pair is an episode of changing conditions. The bluish veins are azurite, the copper carbonate that precedes malachite in the oxidation sequence.
What mounting it works for
-
925 silver bezel setting — the 4 Mohs hardness makes a closed bezel essential; the intense green classically contrasts with silver.
-
Pendants and earrings — 11-15 mm pieces for stud earrings; 17-21 mm for pendants.
-
Wire wrap — soft wire (22-24 gauge) and open wrap; be careful when tightening over edges.
Malachite in tradition
Used as a green pigment in Egypt and Mesopotamia since the fourth millennium BCE, it is one of the oldest minerals in human history. In crystal tradition, it is associated with transformation and protection (renewal and grounding).
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.
Frequently asked questions
Is it natural or treated?
No detectable treatment. The green color and banding pattern are natural; statement based on lapidary observation.
How many pieces are included in lot no. 11?
The exact number and individual dimensions are shown in the product images. Each lot is unique.
Is it suitable for an everyday ring?
At 4 Mohs, it can be scratched by metal objects; for an everyday ring, we recommend a highly protective bezel. For earrings and pendants, there is no restriction.
How do you care for it?
Avoid standing water, acids, and alkalis. Clean with a dry or slightly damp cloth. More at jewelry care.
