These specific sticks

Sticks of irregular cross-section with the grayish bark characteristic of Bursera graveolens and the natural longitudinal cracks of dried wood. The aroma is noticeable when scratching the surface with a fingernail before lighting: citrusy and sweet, more concentrated in the knots where resin accumulates. The intensity varies slightly between sticks in the same pack, which is normal and reflects the natural variability of the wood.

Thicker sticks generate a more sustained ember and a longer-lasting aroma; thinner ones are more practical for brief uses.

What is palo santo

Bursera graveolens is a tree of the Burseraceae family — the same as copal and myrrh — that grows in the tropical dry forests of the Pacific coast of South America, from Mexico to Peru. The characteristic aroma — dominated by limonene, α-terpineol, and caryophyllene — only reaches its full expression in trees that have died naturally and remained on the ground for a minimum of four years.

How to use palo santo

  • Lighting — Hold the stick at a 45° angle and apply direct flame for 20-30 seconds until a stable ember forms.
  • Smoke duration — Palo santo produces smoke for 1-3 minutes before extinguishing itself; this is normal.
  • Deposit base — Place on a ceramic or copper dish or a seashell when finished.
  • Common uses — Purification of spaces before meditation; cleansing of crystals and jewelry tools; room scenting.

Palo santo in Andean tradition

The peoples of the South American Pacific coast have used palo santo in healing and purification ceremonies for centuries.

In the contemporary practice of working with crystals, palo santo is valued for its softer and warmer aroma compared to white sage, which makes it pleasant in enclosed spaces and during prolonged sessions. It is associated with renewing the environment and promoting mental openness for meditation.

Symbolic associations belong to documented cultural traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to recognize genuine palo santo

Genuine palo santo has a citrus-resinous aroma noticeable when scratching the surface with a fingernail before lighting. Well-cured wood is dense — light, odorless sticks when cold usually correspond to wood without proper curing. The inner color is beige-golden with darker streaks in areas of higher resin concentration.

Frequently asked questions

Is the trade of palo santo legal and ethical?

Bursera graveolens is not endangered according to the IUCN. Peruvian palo santo with SERFOR (National Forest and Wildlife Service) certification comes only from naturally fallen trees, not from logging. Always verify that the supplier has traceability of origin.

Why does palo santo extinguish itself after 1-3 minutes?

This is its normal behavior. The resin of Bursera graveolens fuels the flame but, as it is consumed locally, the ember extinguishes. It can be re-lit as many times as necessary. A well-cured stick allows for 6-8 uses.

Does it have any added treatment?

No. These are natural wood sticks without artificial fragrances, added essential oils, or treatments. The aroma is entirely characteristic of the natural resin of Bursera graveolens.
