This Specific Piece

Mookaite is known for its wide palette — from cream to burgundy, passing through mustard and violet — but this piece displays a very rare pale peach pink, without the usual brick or reddish tone of the more commercial variety. The uniformity of the color and the smoothness of the surface indicate an area of the material with little variation in the iron oxides that give it its color.

The teardrop has a finer tip than standard versions, giving it a more elongated silhouette. The copper butterfly sits at the rounded upper end, with its wings oriented upwards — different from other pieces in the series where the wings open horizontally.

Electroformed Copper

In electroforming, the stone acts as the core of an electrolytic process: immersed in a copper sulfate solution and connected to a low-voltage circuit, the metal is deposited onto its surface layer by layer for hours. The result is a unique setting that forms directly on the stone. The process does not damage the mineral or alter its color — the copper only touches the outer surface.

Mookaite in Lapidary Tradition

Mookaite is a siliceous jasper that forms in the Cretaceous marine sediments of the Carnarvon Basin, Western Australia. Its name comes from the Mooka River, near which it was first cataloged on a commercial scale. It is a mineral used exclusively in lapidary work — there are no mookaite deposits outside the Kennedy Ranges region.

In crystal tradition, mookaite is associated with stability and adaptability. It is considered the stone for those who seek to face change calmly without losing their grounding.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to Recognize Genuine Mookaite

Genuine mookaite has an opaque and dense surface that does not allow light to pass through, even with a powerful source. Its colors are always earthy — never electric or fluorescent. Glass or colored resin that imitates it has a more uniform and artificial appearance; genuine mookaite always shows some variation in tone or subtle veining, even if minimal.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the mookaite genuine and untreated?

Yes. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification. The peach pink color is natural, originating from iron oxides in the siliceous matrix.

How is electroformed copper cared for?

Copper develops a patina over time — a natural process that adds character to the piece. To slow this down, avoid contact with water, creams, and perfumes. If verdigris (green patina) appears, clean gently with a dry cloth. Full guide: jewelry care.

Why is it in the outlet collection?

Outlet pieces are our own production with small variations in patina or workshop marks that do not affect structural integrity. The mineral and electroforming are in perfect condition.

Is mookaite fragile for wearing in a pendant?

It is not particularly fragile. With 6.5–7 Mohs, it resists everyday use reasonably well. Avoid direct impacts against hard surfaces — like any gemological mineral — and store separately from other jewelry.
