This particular piece
What makes this series unique is the coexistence of two opposing textures in the same stone: the mirror-polished black onyx on the back and sides, and the rough crystalline druzy covering part of the face. Light interacts differently with each area, creating a matte-gloss contrast that few stones can offer.
The distribution of crystals varies in each piece: some have the druzy concentrated in the center, others spread it in patches towards the edges. No two are alike.
What setting it works for
-
Open setting in 925 silver — The druzy face requires a setting that allows the crystalline texture to be visible. Prongs or an open gallery setting are more suitable than a flat closed bezel.
-
Statement pendants — The druzy texture makes the stone the focal point of the pendant without the need for additional embellishments.
-
Structured wire wrap — The flat back provides a stable base; the wire can go up to surround the druzy without obscuring it.
Onyx in lapidary tradition
Black onyx has been a stone of power in cultures since ancient Egypt, where it was used in amulets and seals. In Victorian jewelry, it was the mourning mineral par excellence, set in gold. In crystal tradition, it is associated with protection and grounding — the stone that provides foundation.
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the black color dye or natural?
Commercial black onyx is typically treated with standard lapidary black dye. The quartz druzy covering part of the face is untreated.
What type of setting do you recommend?
An open gallery setting or one with prongs that leaves the druzy visible. A flat closed bezel can obscure part of the crystalline texture, which is the aesthetic value of the piece.
Can I see the specific piece before buying?
The product photographs show the pieces from the available lot. The distribution of the druzy is unique to each one.
Are the dimensions exact?
Dimensions vary as they are freeform shapes. Each piece is unique; they have a tolerance of ±0.5 mm.
How do you care for onyx with druzy?
Clean with a soft, slightly damp cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners on the druzy — crystals may detach. See jewelry care.
