About This Specific Piece
Carnelian has conchoidal fracture — the same as flint — which allows for creating edges and points with controlled percussion. The bifacial silhouette of these points, worked on both sides to create the central thinning, is the classic form of projectile points used by Native American cultures. The orange-red color is the most intense of colored quartzes; against the light, the pieces show their characteristic translucency. The visible marks on the edges are the signature of manual work.
Intended Uses
-
Pendant with bail or open setting — the arrowhead silhouette makes a pendant with strong character. It can be set with a bail at the blunt upper end or horizontally drilled at the apex to hang from a cord or chain.
-
Collector's item — hand-carved arrowheads made from Brazilian carnelian with this level of orange translucency are premium material for a lapidary collection.
-
Wire wrap — wrapping is done around the body, not the edges, placing the bail at the blunt upper end.
Carnelian in History
In Ancient Egypt, it was a stone of power: the pharaoh's cartouche was carved in carnelian, and the Book of the Dead prescribed amulets of this mineral for the afterlife. In classical Rome, carnelian seals authenticated documents — the relief did not stick to wax like other minerals. Napoleon carried a carnelian seal throughout all his campaigns. In crystal tradition, carnelian is associated with energy and determination. The arrowhead shape adds the symbol of directed movement. Symbolic properties are part of a cultural tradition. They do not constitute medical advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Are the points drilled for hanging?
They are not factory-drilled. The usual method is a metal bail at the blunt upper end, or wire wrap around the body with an integrated bail. It is also possible to drill the apex with a diamond bit since carnelian has a hardness of 6.5–7 Mohs.
