Chiastolite (andalusite) cabochon with natural black cross pattern, available in oval (19×20 mm) and round (26–28 mm diameter) formats. The cross formed by carbon inclusions is a unique geological structure: no two pieces have the same pattern of arms, width, or position within the stone. Origin: Spain. Material acquired from a lapidary wholesale market.

This specific piece
The cross in chiastolite is not a decoration: it is a mineral structure formed during metamorphism by the segregation of carbon particles towards the growth planes of the crystal. Each piece has its own arm geometry — some wider, others with a slight deviation from the vertical axis — and the background varies between light brown, grey, and pink depending on the composition of the rock in which it was formed.
Nr.2 and Nr.3 in round format are especially suitable for geometric or symbolic designs where the circular shape reinforces the impact of the cross. With a thickness of 5 mm, the profile allows for a bezel setting without the piece being too high.
How the cross in chiastolite is formed
Chiastolite is a variety of andalusite that grows in metamorphic rocks (slates, schists) under moderate pressure and temperature conditions. During the growth of the rhombic crystal, carbon impurities present in the rock cannot integrate into the crystalline structure of andalusite and are segregated towards the joining planes between the growth facets. The result is a cross or "X" shaped pattern that traverses the cross-section of the crystal.
What mounting it works for
-
Bezel setting (925 silver or other precious metals) — the hardness of 6.5–7.5 Mohs makes the closed bezel the ideal choice to preserve the edge of the piece; with 925 silver, the contrast between the light metal and the brown-grey background of the stone is remarkable.
-
Pendant or ring with symbolic motif — the natural cross of this stone makes it a common choice for jewelry with personal or spiritual meaning, without the need to add engravings or external motifs.
-
Wire wrap — the flat back facilitates perimeter wrapping; the spiral design visually reinforces the internal cross of the stone.
Chiastolite in lapidary tradition
Chiastolite was known in medieval Spain as "Santiago stone" or "cross stone", and pilgrims on the Camino de Santiago carried it as a protective amulet.
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.
How to recognize genuine chiastolite
Genuine chiastolite shows the carbon cross visible to the naked eye or with a magnifying glass, with irregular edges and varying width along the arms — not a perfectly uniform line. The background of the stone shows a granular texture under magnification, with microscopic inclusions. Imitation in resin or ceramic does not reproduce the mineral microtexture or the variation in arm width.
Frequently asked questions
Is the cross natural or painted?
Natural. It is a mineral structure formed by carbon segregation during the metamorphism of the crystal. It is not a treatment or artificial decoration. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification.
Do all pieces have the same cross shape?
No. Each piece has its own pattern: arm width, position relative to the center, deviation from the axis. The description of the chosen number shows the exact piece you will receive.
