Smoky quartz slice with faceted cut, 17×12×4 mm. The tonal gradation between the dark core and the semi-translucent edges creates a unique optical depth: each facet captures light differently depending on the angle, oscillating between deep brown and amber honey tone. Material acquired from a wholesale lapidary market.

This specific piece

What defines this slice is the chromatic zoning: the interior concentrates the dark pigment while the edges diffuse light with greater transparency. Under direct light, the tone is leather brown; under diffuse or artificial light, the facets generate golden flashes reminiscent of amber. The piece has visual presence despite its compact dimensions.

How the color of smoky quartz is formed

Smoky quartz owes its color to color centers created by natural irradiation: ionizing radiation from radioactive elements in the host rock (granites, pegmatites) releases electrons that become trapped in defects in the SiO₂ crystal lattice along with substitutional aluminum atoms. The result is selective light absorption in the orange-red band, conferring the characteristic brownish tone. Smoky quartz from Brazil, originating from the pegmatite deposits in the state of Minas Gerais, is valued for its structural purity and homogeneous coloration.

What setting it works for

  • Bezel setting (925 silver or other precious metals) — the flat back and low profile allow for a perimeter bezel that frames the facets without competing with them; ideal for a pendant or index finger ring.
  • Pendant with open or window mounting — an open bezel mounting reinforces the optical depth effect by allowing light to enter through the edges.
  • Wire wrap — the thin profile and flat back facilitate wrapping; 22–24 AWG wire in silver or copper works well without adding excessive bulk.

Smoky quartz in lapidary tradition

In Scottish Celtic culture, smoky quartz was known as cairngorm, after the Cairngorm mountains where it was found in abundance. It became a frequently used stone in Victorian jewelry —especially in brooches and kilt accessories— and today it is the national gem of Scotland. In crystal tradition, smoky quartz is associated with grounding and clarity: the stone for those who need to remain anchored while working with abstract ideas or in high-energy environments.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.

How to recognize genuine smoky quartz

Genuine smoky quartz exhibits microscopic inclusions or imperfections under magnification —veils, feather fractures, negative fluid bubbles— that do not appear in smoked glass or synthetic quartz. Its hardness of 7 Mohs makes it resistant to scratching with a stainless steel coin.

Frequently asked questions

Is the color natural or artificially treated?

The color is natural, a result of geological irradiation. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification.

What type of setting is most suitable?

Due to its low profile (4 mm thick) and flat back, closed or semi-open bezel settings in 925 silver are the most natural option. Wire wrap in 22 AWG wire also works well. We recommend a closed bezel setting to protect the facet edges.

Are the dimensions exact?

Nominal dimensions 17×12×4 mm with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm as it is a natural material. It is not an industrially calibrated piece.

Is it a unique piece?

Yes. Each slice has a unique zoning pattern. This reference (No. 1) corresponds exactly to the photographed piece.
