This Specific Piece

The Ø28–38 mm range places these pieces among the most prominent cabochons in the serpentine catalog. At the larger diameter (38 mm), they enter the scale of an artistic piece: enough prominence to become the focal point of an elaborate necklace. The vascular structure of the mineral creates patterns that sometimes appear concentric or spiral when cut circularly — a different visual dynamic than oval cuts.

How Serpentine is Formed

Serpentine results from the serpentinization of ultramafic rocks (peridotite, dunite) through reaction with water at 300–500 °C. The original olivine and pyroxene transform into phyllosilicates of the serpentine group. The green colors come from traces of iron, chromium, or nickel. The veining reflects the mineral fibers and areas of different composition within the serpentinized rock.

What Mounting It Works For

  • Large format pendants with bezel in 925 silver or copper — the Ø28–38 mm diameter requires a custom-made bezel; its presence justifies an elaborate mounting.
  • Collection or decorative pieces — larger formats (Ø35–38 mm) can be mounted as display cabochons.
  • Long-length wire wrap — the circular perimeter offers space for complex wire weaves around the edge.

Technical note: At 3–4 Mohs, serpentine is not suitable for daily wear rings; reserve for pendants, earrings, or display mounts.

Serpentine in History

Dark green serpentine was carved in ancient Egypt for amulets and seals. In imperial China, "serpentine jade" was a legitimate lapidary material with its own value. In Roman and medieval architecture, it was used in floors and columns, especially in the Mediterranean. In crystal traditions, it is associated with grounding and the calmness of rootedness.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to Recognize Genuine Serpentine

At 3–4 Mohs, a knife leaves a visible scratch on the unpolished base. Nephrite, with which it is confused, has a hardness of 6 and is denser (~3.0 vs ~2.6 g/cm³); it feels heavier and colder to the touch. The veining pattern of serpentine is generally more irregular than that of nephrite jade.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it natural untreated serpentine?

Yes. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; does not include formal gemological certification.

Can it be used for rings?

Not recommended for daily wear. At 3–4 Mohs, it scratches with everyday objects. Reserve for pendants, earrings, or display mounts.

What setting is it designed for?

We recommend a custom-made closed bezel. Prong or claw settings expose the mineral to bumps and chipping.

What is the difference between variants?

Each variant indicates the exact diameter and depth. The veining pattern varies; all share the green color of serpentine.

Are the measurements exact?

Tolerance ±0.5 mm. Freeform circular pieces, no industrial calibration.

How to care for it?

Warm water and neutral soap, dry immediately with a soft cloth. Avoid ultrasonics, steam, and acids; avoid abrasive surfaces. More on jewelry care.
