About this specific piece

The crescent moon is one of the most demanding carved shapes in lapidary: the two curved ends must maintain thickness and symmetry while the inner cavity retains its mirror polish. In blue sodalite, the result is particularly effective — the 30 mm arc has a pendant scale without losing its delicacy.

The white calcite veins follow the curve of the moon in some areas, creating an effect of clouds over midnight blue that is unique to this piece.

For which setting it works

  • Pendant with 925 silver bezel — The closed bezel following the contour of the moon is the natural setting; it protects the curved ends (5.5–6 Mohs) and frames the shape.
  • Wire wrap — The wire can follow the outer arc for an organic finish; be careful with the narrowest points at the ends.

Sodalite in lapidary tradition

Named in 1811 for its sodium-rich composition, sodalite was used as a decorative stone in Buckingham Palace in the 19th century, where it was called "Princess Blue." In crystal tradition, it is associated with intuition and clear thinking — properties that make it especially popular in moon-shaped carvings.

The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice.

How to recognize genuine sodalite

Authentic sodalite has a dull-opaque blue without vitreous luster. The white veins are calcite, and the brown-orange spots are characteristic of the species. Dyed howlite mimics the color but does not produce the brown-orange spots typical of sodalite.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it genuine sodalite?

Yes. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; no formal gemological certification.

Is it a unique piece or is there stock?

It is a unique piece individually carved. The characteristics described in the details are specific to this particular piece.

What setting do you recommend for the moon shape?

A closed bezel that follows the complete contour of the arc. Wire wrap also works if the wrapping is reinforced at the narrower ends.

Are the dimensions exact?

The indicated dimensions have a tolerance of ±0.5 mm due to being a hand-carved free-form shape.

How is it cared for?

Clean with a soft, damp cloth. Avoid ultrasonic cleaners and chemicals. More at jewelry care.
