This specific piece
Both sizes come from the same block of Zamoran variscite, which guarantees that the base apple-green color and vein pattern are similar between them. The white and yellowish veins are interstitial quartz and calcite—common material in the Palazuelos deposit—and create a different organic pattern in each piece.
The 4 mm thickness in both sizes is suitable for rings and pendants: enough to give visual depth to the cabochon without adding unnecessary weight. The dome curvature is gentle, which facilitates both bezel and prong settings.
How Variscite color is formed
Variscite is a hydrated aluminum phosphate that precipitates in altered areas of aluminous rocks in the presence of phosphated solutions. The green comes from traces of chromium and vanadium in the crystal lattice. The Palazuelos (Zamora) deposit has a documented Neolithic history: CSIC analyses have identified beads of this mineral in megalithic grave goods in Catalonia and Portugal, making it one of the first interregional exchange materials in the Iberian Peninsula.
What settings it works for
-
925 silver bezel rings — the oval shape and flat back are classic cabochon parameters for a ring. The small size (11–13 mm) is ideal for delicate or minimalist rings; the bezel protects the moderate hardness in daily use.
-
Pendants with oval silver settings — the 13×9 mm size creates a pendant with a noticeable visual presence without being excessive; the 11×8 mm is more discreet and works well on thin chains.
-
Wire wrap — the low profile and flat back facilitate perimeter wrapping with silver or copper wire.
Spanish Variscite in lapidary tradition
Palazuelos variscite is a material of identity: its verifiable Iberian origin, limited to this Zamoran deposit, distinguishes it from the American and Australian variscite on the global market. In crystal traditions, it is associated with calm, grounding, and patience.
The symbolic properties attributed to minerals belong to cultural and historical traditions. They are shared for educational purposes, not as medical advice or a substitute for professional care.
How to recognize genuine Palazuelos Variscite
The green from Palazuelos is earthier and duller than that from Utah. The veins are white or yellow (quartz/calcite), never black as in turquoise. The low hardness (3.5–5 Mohs) distinguishes it from glass or colored resin: a metal key will scratch it. Under magnification, the texture is microcrystalline and uniform, without granularity or bubbles.
Frequently Asked Questions
Has the variscite been dyed or treated?
No. The apple-green color and veins are natural. No detectable treatment. Statement based on lapidary observation; the piece does not include formal gemological certification.
Which of the two sizes is best for a ring?
Both work well for rings. The 13×9 mm size has more visual presence—suitable for a statement ring or designs where the stone is the protagonist. The 11×8 mm is more discreet and comfortable for daily wear. In both cases, we recommend a closed bezel to protect the moderate hardness of the variscite.
Are the two pieces identical?
No. Although they come from the same mineral block, each piece has its own vein pattern. The dimensions are as indicated, with a tolerance of ±0.5 mm due to being hand-cut.
How do I care for this cabochon?
Clean with a dry microfiber cloth. No water or chemicals. Store separately from harder stones. More information: jewelry care guide.
