Red jasper is an opaque variety of microcrystalline quartz (SiO₂) whose characteristic uniform red color—ranging from brick to dark garnet—is due to hematite (Fe₂O₃) inclusions homogeneously distributed throughout the silica mass. With a hardness of 6.5–7 Mohs and no cleavage, it is one of the most widely used lapidary materials throughout human history, found in jewelry, glyptics, and funerary rites since the Upper Paleolithic.
